Dialog With The Dream

The Method

‘Dialog with the dream’ draws from the methods of Shamanic healing and my own personal experience on the path of inner work. In 1995 I became acquainted with the power of shamanic journeys through workshops lead by the American anthropologist, Dr. Michael Harner, who researched shamanism for many years. Shamans launch into journeys in non-ordinary realities (a term coined by Carlos Castaneda) to find cure and information for their tribesmen. As they travel in that reality they connect with spiritual guides in the form of power animals and humans, who assist them in finding the spiritual cause for physical and emotional difficulties. Impressed as I was with the shamanic way, I had no intention of becoming a shaman myself. Through personal encounter with transformational processes I was certain that any person can become one’s own ‘shaman’, connecting to one’s inner forces that can help in finding information and cures. It occurred to me that a closely guided personal journey could be powerful and effective. That was the birth of what I then called ‘reversed shamanic journey’.

  • On a traditional shamanic journey, shamans usually slip into 'non-ordinary' consciousness with the help of drumming. They then embark on the journey, accompanied by their spiritual guides. Upon their return they conduct a healing ritual for their clients.
  • On a 'reversed' shamanic journey, the clients themselves embark on their own journey. The therapist’s voice helps them enter the 'non-ordinary reality’. Then they are closely guided at every step on the way. In this journey the guides and power animals also assist in finding the spiritual cause of their difficulties. However, unlike traditional shamanic journeys, cure and transformation are carried out by the clients throughout their personal journey.

Why is the practice called 'Dialog with the Dream'?

Here – dream – means our life story. Mostly we refer to night-time dreams as ‘unreal’ and to everyday life as ‘real’. However the dream actually reflects our own unconscious reality. Quite often our everyday life is in itself the sleep-like state in which we unconsciously conduct our lives. In Dialog with the Dream we connect between these two realities, to experience a single reality in which we operate and experience life as a whole. The tools we acquire throughout the process – such as grounding and spiritual guides that assist us in resolving difficulties in the ‘non-ordinary reality’ – join us in our ordinary reality. This process changes our perspective on life. We deeply understand that life is in fact a story reflecting our deepest, innermost being and that being alive is to dialogue with this very state of being.
